Grenache is dear to my heart, hence I agreed some years ago to be patron of the Grenache Challenge to held next month.

I will also continue with my present task of tasting wines for this year’s Top 100 for The Weekend Australian Magazine, albeit under the difficulties presented by Covid-19. Instead of waiting for all the submissions to arrive before tasting the wines in each category (whites under and over $25, reds under and over $30, Australian sparkling and French champagne) I’m at the mercy of Australia Post, forced to taste progressively.

It’s not much help to know I’ve tasted 22 grenaches and shortlisted six, because it’s possible that the shortlist will change shape radically, as it’s impossible to guess what other varietal wines will arrive and compete for space. Those decisions will be made in the last few frantic days and hours up to my writing deadline of 9 October.

I can say there are some very good wines in the offing, many from 2019.
