For the first time in many months - we were able to visit some of the wineries / cellar doors in the Yarra Valley.

On a whim - I suggested to my wife to visit Helen's Hill for a tasting and a bite to eat. We were delighted that they offered a range of fantastic food to match the wines. Tasty Gluten Free and Vegan options are also offered. We were more than happy with our G.F - dukkah spiced smoked chicken & mozzarella pizza. Crispy and pliable base. I need the recipe!

Helen's Hill are fortunate to have a large outdoor deck - which serves them well in such troubled times.

This photo is of the Ingram Road single vineyard pinot noir - 2019. Now it is true that I haven't been out and about for a while - but I found this wine to be amazing value for around $22 per bottle!

I am looking forward to taking my friends and family, as well as my happy costumers to visit Helen's Hill in the beautiful Yarra Valley.

Covid 19 Safety Protocols - 10 out of 10!
Every staff member was wearing a mask appropriately - not on their chin! Hand sanitation was in ample supply. We were also required to log our details upon being seated for our tasting/ meal.

Thanks to Gretta and the team at Helen's Hill for a wonderful 'breakout' experience I look forward visiting again soon.

2008 STEFANO LUBIANO SASSO PINOT NOIR
@stefano_lubiana
@marco_lubiana
-
Beautifully coloured blood red ruby with a purple luminescence and a complexed and gamey nose of cherry, duck liver pâté, orange rind, juniper and thyme. There's true underbrush notes and a deep decoration of chocolate husk and coffee.
In the mouth it is proud and strong with a structure that has kept it in fine form over the last 12 years. Adult expressions of blood orange, black cherry, raspberry and strawberry waltz with a meatiness, while a bitter zestiness lends an amaro tint to it all. Very fine tannins and a drive of well placed acidity moves it along, but everything is in balance and harmony. The midpalate seamlessly joins the front and back and shows Chinotto overtones, echoing the citrus once more. The tail drifts long with a cadence of peppermint. Stunning.

Ohhh, if only more Australian Pinot Noir were made in the likeness of this gem! Tasmanian/Australian Pinot Noir at its finest. Pure pleasure ❤

The nose shows off its variety well; deep black currents, cherry skins, black plums and an undertone of smoky-vanilla. Deliciously ripe, fruit driven and balanced in the mouth, with a medley of jubey berries, subtle spice and a lick of confectionery on the lip-smacking finish. Happy Fri-YAY all & hope you’re weekend is filled with Derby Day/ Halloween fun!!🍷🐎🥂🎃

It was wonderful to join the line-up of judges in this year’s McLaren Vale Wine Show. What a crew. I was particularly chuffed to choose the Wine Storyteller’s Trophy (in absence of an international judge’s trophy due to the C-word). I awarded it to the @alphaboxdice Dead Winemakers Society 2018 #Muscat - an aromatic orange wine that sparked the imagination, hit the right notes and made me want more, more, more.

Turns out it has a great story behind it (which I’ll tell in due course) but for now, it looks like Head Winemaker @sam.berketa is enjoying the spiffy trophy. Congrats. I’m sure it sparked plenty of conversation over the tables at the award ceremonies today. Congratulations to all the triumphant trophy winners including @chalkhillwines (Tom Harvey and winemaker Renae Hirsch crowned Bushing Monarch - yes!) @serafinowines @shinglebackwine @maziwines @hedonistwines @bondarwines @sbwines1984 @silent_noise_wine and @mitolowines. It’s Friyay night and I ain’t got nobody (tell me you weren’t singing then! 😜) but boy does this @brunogeorgewines 2016 Barossa Valley Single Vineyard Shiraz has a body to die for! I think I’m in love! 😉❤️🍷 I was craving a big bold Shiraz tonight after a big week and this one has knocked my socks off (slippers have stayed on though because it’s bloody cold! 😂). This is going to kickstart the weekend perfectly! 👌
****
The descriptors are pretty accurate too:
Description
Brooding Dark Berry fruits along with some savoury & black olive aromas. A small portion (25%) of this wine spent time in second fill French oak providing structure and some sweet vanilla aromas. The palate is rich and full of fresh dark berry fruits yet retains an elegance achieved through cold fermentation. Fine firm tannins on the finish complete this concentrated yet fresh and fruitful Shiraz. With careful cellaring this wine will continue to evolve for over many years to come.

Eyes
Medium plum

Nose
Lifted dark berries, forest floor, & slight aniseed.

Mouth
Soft berries, savory, chocolate & great acid structural support.

Cheers & Happy Friyayay! 😊❤️🍷 #barossa #barossavalley #barossashiraz #barossawines #barossawine #barossalife #barossaliving #brunoandgeorgewine #southaustralia #southaustralianwine #supportlocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #wineworld #shiraz

Aged for 6 months in small oak barrels, The Buffalo 2018 Shiraz shows aromas of spicy black cherry and plum that lead to a rich palate of concentrated blackberry and mulberry fruit with a hint of pepper, finishing with smooth velvety tannins.

Vinden Estate is a recent discovery for us but a bloody welcome one! This is the 2019 Basket Press Shiraz from the Hunter Valley. Vinden are experimenting a lot which having recently visited them was awesome to see in the Hunter culminating in some amazing wine. This however is a traditional Hunter Shiraz but a great one! Very fruity, blueberries and blackberries, typical Hunter earthy savouriness, leathery style. Oak present, some smooth vanilla notes but well integrated. Overall, a fantastic modern Hunter classic!

Aphelion, meaning 'from the sun' in ancient Greek, and from the sun, all life is born.
Fruit for the 'Confluence' Grenache comes from the Blewitt Springs sub region in McLaren Vale - 60% from 80 year old vines and 40% from 50 year old vines.
Hand picked with a blend of whole Berry and whole bunch ferment.
Aromatic and juicy, with a lovely savoury finish.

Brokenwood 2020 Rosato, Shiraz Rose from the Hunter Valley. Rose is usually banned from this house but this was a stunner from a recent trip to the Hunter. Given the devastating 2020 smoke taint vintage Brokenwood realised it could salvage its best Shiraz and make rose. So they made what is basically a 2020 Graveyard Rose! It’s an amazing Rose, strawberry dominant with some savoury sweetness and a very long dry finish. $30 for Graveyard? Unheard of!

An expensive bottle of wine to me is $50 or above, I have had this Margaret River Chardonnay which from memory was about $50 from #langtonswines waiting for a good reason to drink it and finally just decided that Tuesday night with mum was a good reason to crack it open.

This wine was yellow in colour which is not normally my cup of tea but it was delicious. It was medium body and slightly Oaked.

What do you class as an expensive bottle of wine?

If I had to choose a best bargain wine of the past 25 years, then this wine would definitely make the short list. This humble wine, made from the classic White Rhone variety of Marsanne has been planted by Tahbilk since the 1860s and they do in fact have, the largest single holdings of Marsanne in the World.
🍷
2019 @tahbilkwines #marsanne
🍷
The first thing that strikes you is ripe fruits of nashi pears and rock melon, along with some spice, plus a floral component of Jasmine flowers. Its textural through the mid palate, with a hint of Lychees and mandarins, that lead to a finish of juicy limes and nice lingering freshness. It's a #verygoodwine and will age beautifully as well.
🍷
#centralvictoria #goulburnvalley #victoria
🍷
Tahbilk got its name from its location. It’s 120km north of Melbourne in the Nagambi Lakes district which the local Aboriginals used to call Tabilk-Tabilk, meaning “place of many waterholes”. The “h” was actually added a little later.
🍷
The Property was purchased by Reginald Pubrick family in 1925 and and has remained in the family ever since. The wines are now made by 4th Generation Winemaker Alistair Pubrick and the vineyards holdings are now a sizeable 200ha. In 2016 Tahbilk was awarded the James Halliday Winery of the Year, and incidentally he gave this wine a pretty handy 93 points as well.

Available to purchase #budburstwinecollective for $18.95

Tyrrell’s 2019 Mother’s Shiraz from the Hunter Valley. A great medium bodied Shiraz. From great stock coming from cuttings of 4 Acres, Johnnos and Old Patch, now 10 year old vines. The slightly older oak used makes this very drinkable right now. Beautifully floral and ripe red fruits, cherry dominant bit of blueberry. Savoury and spicy on the back. Stunning wine, want more!
Simply paired with crispy skin salmon, cous cous and roasted eggplant and cherry tomatoes. Long day finished well.

2019 DILWORTH & ALLAIN DOUG'S VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
@dilworthandallain
-
Bruised ruby with a purple hue and a shying nose of violets, dried rose, sour cherry, dried red berries, watermelon, peppered beef, prune, stalky almost root vegetal notes and a colouring from some whole bunch. A touch of sage in there too.
In the mouth this is seriously dry and firmly structured like an Old World Pinot, with intense woody/spicy tannins and a clench of sour cherry acidity. The palate is powerful, but doesn't give itself away just yet. This needs time to flesh out, stretch its arms and settle. As it stands right now it's tannins and acid first, then tight flavours of plum, underripe raspberry and blueberry, pickled watermelon rind, thyme and twiggy stalks. The midpalate is a storm of tension, tannin and sourness and when the tail does escape, it does so with overtones of minted Licorice and apple skins.
-
In my mind, this is either one of two things...a Pinot that has intentionally used underripe grapes to create a very firmly structured wine of tension and energy as its focus, or it is a Pinot that has been built firm and structured for the long haul. Either way it's exciting and surprisingly Old World-ish!
-

Full bodied, soft tannins and gorgeous mouthfeel. I really feel something special drinking this wine.
The vineyard in Clarendon, McLaren Vale was established in 1971, and the fruit from here used in some of Australia's most iconic wines.
It wasn't until 2012 under new owners, that they kept the fruit for themselves. So this is essentially the first Cabernet Sauvignon they bottled under their own label.

@joshuacooper88
-
Misty bruised crimson with a nose of rosehip, hibiscus syrup, zippy red berries, plum verging on prune, dried orange peel and earthy, herbal underbrush. Savoury and zesty sumac sits around the fruit.
The palate is rich, impressively driven and deep in flavour, with a firm tension of Macedon acidity and tightly packed patches of resin-like tannins. Black cherry, ripe plum, sour blueberry and tart raspberry are met with a green-edged rusticity that dries the midpalate and wrestles with the fruit. (Imagine the furriness from licking fresh Sage). The tail is long and drifts with the same notes from start to finish, ending with hints of cola and a breath of prune, thyme and oregano. Great intensity!
-
A unique expression of Macedon Pinot Noir that, for me, was exciting and delicious. It excites me even more knowing its winemaker is getting better and better every year and if you haven't tried any Joshua Cooper wines yet, I reckon you need to!

#141 Ad Hoc Hen and Chicken 2019 Chardonnay
•
Ad Hoc or ‘go-to’, this wine certainly ticks all the right boxes when it comes to a reliable 'go-to' Chardonnay that effortlessly showcases beautiful depth and balance.
•
Primary aromas of citrus and frangipani are foremost recognised. However, this is promptly replaced with the more traditional and decadent, brioche and butter aromas. Tight acidity, lends its hand to making each glass full of vitality, with excellent fruit definition initially with yellow apples, citrus and melons. Although taking a sharp turn with a long, rich, and flavoursome finish, that's made easy with a complex, minerality and toasty nuttiness.
•
Perfect for a mid-week splurge, and unquestionably receiving no objections from us!
•
Happy drinking 🍇🍷😊
